How to convert vert. drive to horizontal drive to build wakeboard winch?

have 6.5 B&S lawnmower motor. 2 ways I've heard of converting to horiz. drive is rebuild w/ conversion kit, or right angle gear sys. project for college students (little money lying around). where do we find a rebuild kit? how much hp loss through R angle gears? what's cheaper? other suggestions? trying to build wake board winch, will need to buy Torque-A-Verter, and rope spool. have- motor, steel for framing, welder, controls, etc. we are budget minded but need answers and options. thanks, RC51guy
